Wk 6: Responsive Design

It has been about a half year since the last time I was with my two little cuties – Neptune and Jupiter. I missed them so much. Due to the particular situation currently, I am only able to see them through a mobile screen on a video call. When I started on this week’s assignment, their fluffy figures just flashed in front of me.

All the sweet memories started from the NYC Best Friend Life Saving Center. Yes, I adopted them from there when they were about two months old. Till now, I still feel so grateful and fortunate that I went there and meet them and took them home that sunny Sunday afternoon. Since then, I began to get to know more about animal adoption.

The heartbreaking fact is that more than 1,700 dogs and cats are killed every day in American shelters and that happens simply due to no safe home for them to settle down. But euthanizing animals who are suffering irremediably but not killing healthy animals and labeling it “euthanasia” to make it more palatable when comes to these animals. Best Friends along with other organizations have been devoted to no-kill movement a while ago and hope to lead a no-kill nation by 2025. They made a great effort to achieve this goal, especially in: 1. encourage pet adoption over purchase to help increase the number of animals leaving shelters; 2. support and provide spay and neuter if necessary to decrease the number of animals entering into shelter; 3. host lifesaving events across the country to help people value all lives.

Therefore, I applied the concept of animal care in my design of landing pages. Actually, I think this is more like a redesign of Best Friend NYC.

Their logo is an abstract dog face with an orange background, so to better blend in this iconic item, I chose a color palette that includes orange and essential colors – white and black. The color orange is very saturated and expresses a spirited, energetic sense. With cute animal figures in the foreground, all the visual elements convey a strong tender and welcoming sense, which just fits the vibe of the Best Friend community.

I also inserted a cute image as the major visualization item on the landing page to attract attention and convey a warm welcome message.

I minimize the elements displaying on both platforms because from my perspective, especially for the mobile one, which is the landing page made for the mobile application. I believe for someone who downloads this application, he or she has already known what this organization is. Thus, all they need is just a simple process to login in or sign up. The corresponding landing page on a desktop platform basically does the same work as a login page.

For the desktop platform, add a panel behind the login elements. The elements on the right part are not bounded and floating now, which are not very blended into the background.
