I cooperate with Allie Yu on this project.
Ideation:
Our idea is initially inspired by a movie called The Legend of 1900 (The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean). In that movie, the leading actor 1900 lives on a ship for his whole life. He once attempted to get off the ship to the outside world, but the outside world is too “big” for his imagination at that point. He is too daunted by the size of the world. Feeling that his fate is tied to the ship, 1900 cannot leave the only home he has known since he was born. He just gives his life to the music and to stay in the only home he knows till the end.
Allie and I love that the movie depicts the world in 1900’s mind as “on the ship”: playing piano as a routine and duty, and “outside the ship” – filled with pleasure but way too “big”. We are intrigued by this dichotomous setting of the world. The accompanied conflicts in staying in whichever world is also something we find interesting.
We construct our dichotomous world as “sea” and “land”. Our story is about making a choice between pleasure and responsibility.
